Derrick Mason ubruptly retires on July 14 leaving the Ravens with a huge void at the reciever position. What options do the Ravens have? Mark Clayton ? Not likely at best he is a #2 and frankly that is a bit of a stretch. Demetrius Williams has show big play potential but do you really want to gamble on a reciever with chronic leg, groin issues? Yamon Figures? please! Justin Harper? who?? Marcus Smith? Notice all the question marks? I am sure John Harbaugh has. So where does that leave the Ravens? Has beens like Joe Horn or Marvin Harrison, stiffs like Kelley Washington. Mason was a clutch playmaker and a key part of Flacco's development and the sucess of the 2008 Baltimore Ravens.
Enter the contensious Brandon Marshall knick-named "Baby TO" I would call him "Mr Reliable". He averages 15 Games per season and 75 catches a year over his 3 year career (Those numbers were skewed by a 20 catch rookie season). In 2007 he snagged 102 balls and in '08 he caught 104 passes. Touchdowns well he averages 5 touchdown catches per year but an amazing average of 50 1st downs per season! Talk about moving those chains! That is exactly what Cam Cameron and John Harbaugh are looking for in the offense.
To trade for Marshall the Ravens would likely have to pony up a player and or draft picks the price may be steep but what are your options? Of course Marshall would also want to re-negotiate his contract but I look at it like this. You have already spent a 1st round pick on Clayton which really has panned out as expected so why not part with a #1 and a conditional 3rd or 4th rounder. The Ravens are close and at times like these the window gets smaller exponentially every year.
